Welcome to the 47th season of the St Albans Chamber Choir.
Once again it is both exciting and a pleasure to introduce a St Albans Chamber Choir season. As usual, the music ranges over five centuries and includes both little-known gems and great masterpieces. One of these, however, is in disguise as the Bach Cantata 191 recycles movements from the B Minor Mass and another - Bach Magnificat - will be expanded to include the four charming movements customarily added by Bach when the work was sung at Christmas. An evening of trumpet-capped splendour is guaranteed.
In January we return to the beautiful acoustic of the chapel at London Colney for a sumptuous programme of Renaissance polyphony featuring a mass for double choir by Palestrina, the movements of which will be interspersed with plainchant and motets telling the Christmas story. More plainchant will be heard in the Abbey in March but this time surrounded by the rich choral and organ textures of Duruflé’s Requiem. This will be complemented by shorter works from the pens of Duruflé’s compatriots and contemporaries.
The seventeenth century is sometimes thought of as a musical black hole between the glories of the Renaissance and the genius of Bach, yet it was the time of Monteverdi, Schütz and Purcell (and Charpentier, come to that) whose expressive experiments with both harmony and texture bring our season to a close in June.
We look forward to your joining us.
