Welcome to the 45thseason of the St. Albans Chamber Choir.
It is, as always, a pleasure to introduce and welcome you to a Chamber Choir season. JS Bach is very much the featured composer this year. The rare opportunity to savour the vitality, variety and sustained spirituality of his wonderful motets in one sitting will be welcomed as will a performance of the direct and dramatic St John Passion, which so memorably contrasts the turbulence of the human world with the serenity of celestial redemption. We are particularly delighted to welcome Rogers Covey-Crump, a former member of the Chamber Choir, as the Evangelist, as well as the rich period timbres of the Chameleon Baroque Orchestra.
Our Christmas concert will, like our Christmas across the Centuries recording, range from medieval to modern carol settings, though it is an almost entirely new programme including some little-known seasonal gems from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Those who have attended our previous performances in the chapel at London Colney will need little incentive to return. The acoustic and ambience are perfect for Victoria’s timeless perfection which this time will have a mass setting as its frame, the movements being interspersed with plainchant and polyphonic settings of Marian texts.
Finally, we honour a fine composer, whose early death at the age of only 59 undoubtedly deprived us of much marvellous choral music. The searing beauty of Leighton’s Crucifixus pro nobis - settings of metaphysical poetry - will be the centrepiece of the programme, which will also include some of his well-crafted organ music.
